Turquoise

Prized since remotest antiquity for its superb blue color, turquoise is known to have been worn by the women of ancient Egypt. The name means "Turkish stone," because the trade route that brought it to Europe came through Turkey. Its rich color is ascribed to copper, while the presence of iron introduces the greenish cast. Some of the world's finest turquoise comes from Iran (formerly Persia.) The U.S. is alos a major source.

In ancient times, it was thought to possess magical powers and today it is said to bring success in love and money.

Turquoise is a birthstone for December along with blue topaz.
