Amethyst is mined primarily in Brazil and Uruguay. Found in long geodes of volcanic rock, amethyst gets its purple color from manganese and trace amounts of iron. Undergoing intense heat or radiation transforms purple amethyst into green amethyst.
Used as a talisman in ancient times, amethyst is said to be a powerful healer, brings good luck and guards against homesickness.
