Pearl
Pearls, an organic gem, were used by the Greeks and Romans. By 2,500 B.C., there already existed a substantial pearl trade in China.
Pearls are formed by a mollusk's reaction to the presence of a foreign body within its shell. The mollusk secretes a mother-of-pearl "nacre" that completely encrusts the foreign object.
Pearl is the birthstone for June.
