Iron pyrite, or iron sulfide as it is sometimes called, is a brittle mineral with a metallic luster and pale brass-colored hue. The name pyrite derives from the Greek word Pyr, meaning "fire". When struck against steel, it creates sparks that resemble fire. This resemblance made iron pyrite popular for use in early firearms such as the wheellock. Iron pyrite has been nicknamed “fool's gold” due to the slight resemblance it holds to gold, but ironically, small quantities of actual gold are sometimes found in iron pyrite.
